Snow! and the view from my window

It will come as no surprise to anyone in the UK and maybe elsewhere (I shouldn’t have thought our weather gets reported internationally, but you never know) that we’ve had quite a lot of snow here recently. Here in Nottingham, the snow arrived about a week after some parts of the country got it, but it’s been fairly heavy since. So, here is a photo of the current view from my window, complete with snow:

What you can’t really see in that photo is that it’s been snowing more-or-less constantly all day and doesn’t show any signs of stopping. We’re not very well equipped to deal with snow in this country and so all sorts of things are grinding to a halt. Schools are closed, buses are delayed or not running, people can’t get to work. Thankfully, I’ve got a few days off now, so the snow may have abated by the time I next need to make my way to work.

Speaking of time off: over the next few days I’m going to be working on a short story for the Dead Robots’ Society anthology. The theme of the anthology handily fits with a story I’d been planning to write for a while, so now is the perfect time to get it done and have somewhere appropriate to submit it. I’ve written about 900 words this morning and submissions to the anthology have to be under 5000, so it seems like I’ve already produced a good chunk of the story. However, I’m not sure how much of what I’ve written will make it into the final draft. I have a feeling I’ve started the story several hundred words too soon, but I won’t cut anything until it’s finished.

And that’s all of my news. Apologies for not getting my Classic Reads section going yet: I’ve got far too many books to read and not enough time for them all. A Writing Life post will be coming soon, too. For now though, I’m going to watch the snow and hammer out a few more words on that short story.
